Topic 8: The Body That Turns on Itself, the Body That Heals Itself

Professor Posey explained the biology of cancer, and then gave an overview of treatment options, such as gene therapy, that utilize the latest advances in "red biotechnology" -- biotechnology applied to medical problems.  Professor Schramer showed a selection of artwork about cancer and by artists with cancer, then discussed art as a healing activity for cancer patients, the role of design in fundraising for disease research, and various types of art and design used in the service of healthcare, such as interior design for healthcare facilities, horticultural design in healing gardens, and realistic nipple tattoos for breast cancer survivors who have had mastectomies.  Students had the opportunity to palpate models of breast cancer and testicular cancer before moving to the Columbus State Community College Anatomy Lab, where Professor Kenz showed us real cancers inside the bodies of cadavers.
