This course is designed to introduce you to the most cutting-edge issues in biology today, then guide you through the process of conceiving, planning, and executing a work of art inspired by, or in reaction to, contemporary biological science.

In the science portion of the course you will learn about current topics such as biotechnology, cloning, and stem cells.  Each topic will be presented in a lecture, with additional readings, hands-on lab work, visiting scientists, and field trips to research labs.

The studio art portion of the course will begin by introducing you, through lecture, discussion, and field trips, to a number of contemporary artists who are addressing scientific themes in their work.  You will then propose your own original artwork (or series of artworks) that explores the visual beauty, ideas, ethics, and/or politics of biology today.  With one-on-one help from the instructor, as well as feedback from your peers in class critiques, you will refine your concept, conduct the necessary research, and plan the execution of your project.  In the second half of the semester you will focus on creating your work of art and writing an accompanying Artist’s Statement. At the end of the year, the class will plan and install an exhibition of all class projects in a gallery on campus.
