Drawing from the life model in class.

This combined Junior and Senior level course gives you the opportunity to practice your figure drawing skills in class, while teaching you how to conceive, plan, and execute a creative project of your own design outside of class.  3012-level students will continue to experiment with content, media, and drawing techniques, while 4012-level students will further refine their choice of subject, medium and style to better define themselves as artists.

Life models will be available at every class session this semester, giving you extensive time to practice and improve your observation-based figure drawing skills.  If you are particularly concerned with the realistic portrayal of the figure, you will be able to participate in optional reviews of human anatomy.  You may also request to serve as a pose monitor, a role that will enable you to position the model as needed for your own projects.

The out-of-class Independent Drawing Series assignment allows you the freedom to choose your own subject matter, style, and drawing method, while giving you first hand experience of the artist’s practice of working in series.  You will be guided through the process of brainstorming, planning, managing deadlines, receiving feedback, and making revisions, while working to meet your own artistic goals for the project.

You will develop some of your drawings into exhibition-quality pieces suitable for Junior Assessments or inclusion in a professional portfolio. By creating a portfolio website in CCAD’s Digication service, you will learn how to digitally document your work and present it in accordance with current professional standards.

At the beginning of the semester, all students will outline their drawing goals in writing, and will subsequently evaluate their own progress regularly in critiques. These critiques will help you learn to talk about your artwork and ideas comfortably, while teaching you how to give constructive and useful criticism to your peers.  Critiques will also require you to present yourself and your work in a professional manner, one appropriate for addressing future employers or clients.
