Drawing from the life model in FA 202.

DRAFT: This module has unpublished changes.

Sophomore year is a transition between the observation-based, technique-oriented Foundations year and the more complex and personal artwork you will make in your Junior and Senior years.  This course will review and strengthen the skills you obtained in Foundations Drawing, while giving you the opportunity to explore unfamiliar media and introduce more content and self-expression into your work.

To increase your competency in observational drawing, you will continue to work from the life model in class.  While striving for accuracy and realism through measured drawing, perspective systems, and the study of human anatomy, you will refine your rendering skills and improve your use of composition and value structure.  At the same time, a series of homework assignments will allow you to explore more conceptual issues such as creating narrative, developing your personal style, and expressing your own ideas and opinions, while working independently from different types of reference sources and/or your imagination.

In a process of experimentation that will help you define yourself as an artist, you will try new media, new types of drawing supports, and new scales of working.  Regular completion of class assignments will guide you in developing a consistent work ethic that will contribute to your future productivity and success as an artist, and will provide you with finished portfolio pieces for your Assessments in the spring.  Class critiques will teach you to think critically, talk about art, give constructive feedback to your peers, and defend your own ideas, while class discussions about other artists’ work will help you understand where your work fits into art history and the contemporary art world.
