The objective of this course is to make you a better painter.

The catalog describes the course as “student selects focus,” meaning that each student is free to determine their own subject matter and painting style.  During class sessions, you will be given the opportunity to paint from a life model, or you may work from a still life of your own arrangement, from your photo or digital references, or from your imagination.

At the first class meeting, the instructor will interview you to determine your level of experience, your interests, and your artistic goals.  From then on, instruction will be tailored to meet your individual needs.  The instructor will:

  • provide one-on-one assistance with your painting problems
  • critique your current painting projects, both in-class and independent
  • recommend techniques and materials appropriate to your painting style and artistic goals.
  • suggest painters, both historical and contemporary, whose work is relevant to yours.

Depending on the interests of the class, brief lectures may be presented on the topics of painting mediums, supports, paint chemistry, color mixing, specific techniques, or other topics requested by students.

At the end of the course you will present your paintings in a full-class critique, in which you will get feedback from your peers and gain experience in judging and discussing works of art.
