Project 4 Part 2: Simultaneous Contrast
Goal:
Students will also explore an extended application of color theory. With the same 3 designs you will demonstrate how a mid-value tertiary color (BG, YG, RP, RO, YO or PB) can be effected by its surrounding colors in 3 different ways (Value, Temperature, and Intensity).
Activities:
Using Ai the student will apply color the their final cultural motif design. There will be 3 final “prints” of the same design. One design will express value shift, the second temperature shifts, and the last intensity shifts. All designs must be 10 x 10”, the file size must be 300dpi/ppi, and lastly you should be working in RGB.
Things to consider:
Maintain a digital palette any accidental color adjustment will prevent the intended shifts (value/temperature/intensity). The constant color (mid-value tertiary) should be surrounded by another color to create the value or temperature or intensity sifts. The more decorative the design there is a higher probability for success.
Suggested artist to research:
Joseph Albers (color), Hans Hoffman (color), Victor Vasarely (color), Bridget Riley (color), Frank Stella (color), Kenneth Noland (color), Yaacov Agam (color), Richard Anuszkiewicz (color & design), William Morris (wallpaper designs), and Art Nouveau (wallpaper designs)
Critique guidelines:
Grade will be given based off of a 2-part process.
Part 1: Students will present and describe their process (sketches, the use of Gestalt principles and simultaneous contrast)
Part 2: Students must comment on peer’s work using the appropriate vocabulary and have the ability to see if simultaneous contrast is working in the designs presented.
Building Knowledge:
This project is a review of Gestalt principles and an advanced understanding of color theory.
