Loren Babcock, a scientist specializing in paleontology and stratigraphy, is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, books, and edited volumes. He has received numerous grants for his work, including from the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society, and his received many honors. Among them, he is a recipient of the prestigious Charles Schuchert Award for Excellence and Promise in Paleontology from The Paleontological Society. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, a Fellow of The Paleontological Society, and Chair of the International Subcommission on Cambrian Stratigraphy.

 

In addition to his scientific career, Babcock is an avid photographer. His work emphasizes geologic and biologic subject matter, providing a reminder of the inextricable connection between art and science, and focusing attention on a truly interdisciplinary creative process. His outdoor and studio work has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, journals, and books published around the world and in a variety of languages. He has appeared on television and radio programs the world over. His work has been exhibited in North America, Europe, and Asia, and showcased in television documentaries. Babcock’s photos are highlighted in the richly illustrated book Visualizing Earth History (John Wiley & Sons, in collaboration with the National Geographic Society).

 

Dr. Babcock is an Adjunct Instructor at CCAD, a Professor of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University, and a Guest Professor of Geology at the University of Lund, Sweden.

 

He earned his PhD in Geology from the University of Kansas, his MS from Kent State University, and his BS from the State University of New York College at Fredonia.
