BIO:  James H. Weigle

 

James Weigle was born in 1958 in Somerset, PA. and educated at Carnegie-Mellon University(BFA), Pennsylvania State University(MFA), and has professional printer certification  from the Tamarind Institute. He is  Professor of Fine Arts in the Printmaking Dept. at Columbus College of Art & Design since 1983; with residences in Columbus, OH and Provincetown, MA.  In addition to lithography and relief printing, Weigle has taught papermaking, letter-press and book arts. As a  life-long painter, he also works in oil painting and transparent watercolor, to  capture the Cape Cod environment. He attends the Fine Arts Work Center, while maintaining his Beach Point studio in Provincetown. In Columbus, his participation includes: The Ohio Art League, Art for Life, Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative and has coordinated art classes for  Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  

 

 Weigle has printed for professional artists at the Tamarind Institute, SOLO Impressions,  Atelier Ettinger, and CCAD.  His original prints are limited editions, or unique monotypes on handmade paper. He is particularly skilled in traditional lithography using Bavarian limestone. As an  artist papermaker, his work evolved into 3-D cast paper, stencils, and artist books. He depicts aspects of natural beauty or mystery, while his prints often become political or environmental statements.                                                                                                                                                                                            Weigle served as juror for the Columbus Riverfront Arts Festival, the Dublin Art & Music Festival and the Chillicothe Art League.  James was invited to participate in the first Chinese International Print Work Studio, Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts;  and has also exhibited in Seoul, S.Korea.  His art is widely collected in both Ohio and Massachussetts, and belongs to many private collections.
