Power | Artist Statement

For as long as time has existed, Mother nature has fully ruled our world by continuously restoring itself. Although we assume we have full power, our civilizations will eventually crumble, disease will spread and the catastrophes will occur yet nature will survive as long as there is an Earth to live on.  and up to this day she is simply stronger than mankind and technology. Although, mankind will always try to dominate, mankind will never be able to dictate the decisions that nature is to make. By proving her power this secures her position over human embodiment

Our presentation “The embodiment of Nature” will portray the absolute power of nature over humans. The female figures we use represent an embodiment of mother nature. The manipulation and exercise of the seasons of Summer, Fall, winter and Spring exhibit the powerful sequence of continiuous death and rebirth in both nature and humanity.

Our photography and video based installation is meant to provoke a mind settling reflection towards our definition of power and how we believe we are the ones that obtain it. As the faces individually shift into the transformation of the season, it is noticeable how we lose ourselves  into the power of nature and become a mere embodiment.

Power | Response Statement

The theme of power instantly drew me to nature, which I thought was a nice contrast to what people typically think of as powerful (money, influence, control). Instead of brandishing our own power in the world we wanted to instead put into perspective how the world has vastly greater power over us, and nature and the earth itself stuck out as the perfect example of that idea. There are so many cyclical aspects of nature as well that it seemed perfect to focus on for a sequential project and we ultimately decided on the seasons.

Many aspects of this project played to my own personal aesthetic strengths. I really pushed for a photographic project since I’m a photography major and I tend to focus on both nature and the human figure throughout all of my artistic fields. The theme of power really allowed me to investigate further on this aesthetic and I feel as though my greater understanding of the theme of power in relation to our concept will heavily influence my artwork in the future.

I was fortunate enough to get paired with three other strong minded and enthusiastic girls for this project and Natalia and I both came to the table with extremely similar ideas for what we wanted to do. It was stressful as times too though while dealing with all strong willed individuals because we all wanted to push our own ideas onto the project and we were all leader types who now had to work together on the same level while was ultimately a very beneficial experience for future group work. My only regret for this project was that I unfortunately didn’t get my peer grade in on time, but it would have reflected that all of my teammates were wonderful to work with and I’m disappointed I didn’t get to reflect that there.
