ARTIST'S STATEMENT
A Reflection on My Body of Work
My paintings began as an effort to capture the presence of place. These were not images of actual existing places, but sort of distilled essences of a number of spaces that shared that particular presence. I do not experience this presence as a "discrete being" or "spirit" or anything like that. It is like the layers of accumulated experience in those spaces speak to me of mystery, or loss or, sometimes, grandeur.
I paint these oils from memory, since that seems to filter out the irrelevant details and allow me to freely focus on the impact of place that I wanted to convey. The paintings are large enough to fill the field of the viewer's focused vision so that the viewer can feel that they could enter into the space and possess it. The paintings are without figures so that they remain private spaces in which to experience what I have presented.
I am drawn to color and I use it emotively. I work in multiple layers of contrasting colors so as to create scintillations and intensities. The surfaces of my paintings have always been active. Early on this was the result of many patterns but, more recently, I use textural paint handling variations as well. I desire to create an aesthetic equivalent for those accumulated layers of experience.
I began using borders in my paintings at first because of the play between illusion and flatness the borders accentuated. Later, the borders became alternative spaces that dialogued with the central image so as to develop or to contrast its mood.
In the most recent works there are more paintings inspired by current events and politics. I am not so much interested in putting forth my opinions as asking questions empathically.
I believe in the power of art to slip past our own particular dogmas by using a language in which we have no catch phrases or position papers. It may cause some of us to reexamine something we thought we knew all about.
Currently, I am exploring notions of time through doing paintings in series. The paintings are read like timelines and are often about the passing of time. The paintings seem to have moved from poems to novels.
I still work in many layers, in large scale and with unpeopled spaces when I work in oil. I also work more traditionally in watercolor. My watercolor paintings are narrative still-lives, which balance eye candy realism with a suspicion of a snarky remark.

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE
Chair of Painting Department: As Chair of Painting, I am responsible for controlling the budget of the Painting Department and, from Fall 2009 until Spring 2012, all the Painting and Color theory class budgets as well. I evaluated full-time and adjunct faculty members, track compliance with school requirements and deadlines, and hold joint and separate informational and developmental meetings with the faculty of drawing and painting. I have represented Fine Arts at Portfolio Days, Major Selection events, Family Weekends, and presented at Studio Day on behalf of. A variety of curricular development and accreditation duties are also my responsibility.
I manage the Drawing and Painting facilities year round, coordinating maintenance, furnishings, and purchasing. I direct the Drawing and Painting Administrative Assistants. As the result of a major roof leak event in 2010, I coordinated with facilities and faculty in the task of moving each faculty member out of their offices and then back in, on a rotating basis, to allow for repairs of ceilings and replacement of carpets without disrupting the ongoing teaching of classes.
Curriculum development:
As a faculty member, I created, developed and taught the FA370 Junior Fine Arts Seminar and its “spun off” sister course FA275 Studio Professions, which became required courses in the Fine Art Curriculum. I also developed a Summer FA470 & 471 Studio Thesis Course taught for three summers and a summer FA 2112, FA3112 & FA4112 Watercolor class that is taught entirely on location at a variety of Columbus locations.
As Chair of Painting I have participated in the examination and refinement of all the offerings in the area of painting and watercolor and wrote the descriptions for those classes, and for the drawing classes, for the Course Catalog. I was intimately involved in the writing of the assessment goals for those classes as well. When the new Painting and Color Theory Class was taught as a pilot course for a second year, I instructed the first of three years of sections. I then undertook training and overseeing the PCT instructors when the class became a general requirement for the Freshman year.
Faculty President:
During my term as Faculty President, I oversaw the final revisions and approval of a Faculty Grievance Procedure, a revised Student Evaluation Form, a formal structuring of committee service and terms and a updating and revision of the Faculty Council Charter. I guided the process as Faculty Council developed initial recommendations for faculty rank, salary promotion standards, as requested by the President.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Office of Student Advisement:
I was the Fine Arts representative to the Office of Student Advisement for seven years and have helped out during the rush periods for another semester. Mr. Roderick Jungbauer asked me to review and advise on the first online registrations software entries and to evaluate the use of it following the first semester it was employed. I was responsible for Fine Art graduation audits and each semester reviewed audits of all Fine Arts majors' requirements. I met with students to give advice on and approval of schedules for each semester and for academic and career advisement. To do this I had to be completely familiar not only with course requirements and scheduling, but with student and faculty needs and strengths. I also attended the annual conference of the Ohio Academic Advisement Council in 2000, 2003,2004
Field Trips:
2013: Organized and guided through my fourth CCAD Student bus trip to the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh PA. I originated, and then organized, CCAD's previous three successful school-wide bus field trips to the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh PA in October of 2004, December of 1999 and November of 2008.
I also initiated Junior Seminar Field Trips to Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati Museum of Art, Springfield Art Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Contemporary Art Center.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS
I believe art fills a serious gap in today's educational system. Art serves as the best discipline to teach creative problem solving and evaluative/critical thinking. Art is also a direct link to our cultural heritage as that identifies our group identities and our links to our own history. In the studio classroom where technical abilities are too focused on these important forces can get pushed aside, resulting in a sort of lifeless visual echolalia. That is why I believe try always to ask not just how can I teach a student to do this or do this better but, equally, why should they do this at all?
My solution, in practice, is to always link the technical skill practice to a conceptual problem solving assignments. I will introduce each problem in the context of art historical and contemporary artist's practices. I will discuss the assignment as it both relates to successfully mastering the technical skills but also as it leads to successfully communicating a personal solution.
Specifically, an introduction to the idea of still-life as narrative might explore symbolism of objects, both traditional and personal, look at the role of lighting and color in creating emotional positioning, and look a variety of meaning types in the historic record of still-life painting. The technical problem would then be demonstrated- learning to layer watercolor and combine it with a direct, unlayered passage of watercolor, in order to create different levels of portrayed space. The assignment would be to create an original still life that fits into one or more of the meaning classifications discussed. The measurement of success of that assignment would be clear during a group critique in which peers would attempt to place each other's painting first by the meaning classification and then to translate the specifics of the original piece.
Students at upper levels are ready to direct their work toward more personally directed problems and skill building. They benefit a lot from one on one critiques but I believe, at the undergraduate level they should continue to have to confront problems that challenge their comfort level in both thinking and skill application. I continue to give them specific assignments but stress the processes of exploring the assignment thoroughly and developing a variety of strategies and approaches to the solutions. As their concept of the vast variety of working practices in the art world grows, they need to realize that their own practice need not be narrow.
It is my goal that every student leave my studio classes with improved technical skills, certainly, but more importantly, they have a solid command of their own creative thinking processes. I further want the upper level students to have acquired a clear idea of their own strengths and inspiration. With this should come a practical, self-determined method by which to refine and develop their artistic life.
